Virginia Transformer Manufactures Its Largest Transformer Yet
We are pleased to announce that Virginia Transformer has manufactured our largest transformer to date: a remarkable 345 MVA transformer for the renewables market. The liquid-filled step-up unit is more than 36 feet long, 25 feet high, 22 feet wide, and weighs more than 542,000 pounds. Produced with care at our GTC facility for Rosendin Electric’s Nighthawk project, this gargantuan transformer is, literally, a huge achievement and a testament to the exceptional capabilities and dedication of our team.
The Nighthawk energy storage project is a collaborative effort between Arevon and Tenaska, aimed at supporting local energy reliability and maximizing the utilization of clean, renewable energy sources. Located in Poway, California, this 300-megawatt battery storage facility addresses the state’s energy and reliability challenges, particularly in the face of extreme weather and tight energy supplies. By reducing California’s reliance on carbon-emitting fossil fuels, Nighthawk contributes to a more sustainable and efficient energy grid. Furthermore, the project has signed a long-term contract to provide energy and resource adequacy services to Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), connecting to the grid at the Sycamore Canyon Substation.
The Nighthawk project plays a vital role in increasing the reliability and resiliency of California’s electrical grid for all its residents. Battery storage offers a range of benefits, including the ability to capture excess renewable energy during times of peak generation and discharge it into the grid when energy demand is high. By leveraging battery storage technology, the project helps to stabilize the power supply and ensure a consistent, uninterrupted flow of electricity. The Nighthawk project’s location within an existing industrial park brings economic activity to the area, further reinforcing its positive impact on the local community.
Our colossal 345 MVA transformer further establishes us as the leader in securing reliable power to the renewables market, in addition to all the markets served by Virginia Transformer. Because of our shortest lead times in the industry, we are able to expedite the expansion of clean energy infrastructure and reduce long-term delays in the supply of renewable energy. This accomplishment is yet another example of Virginia Transformer’s commitment to enabling U.S. manufacturing and increasing the reliability of the U.S. electric grid.
Congratulations to our GTC and Renewables Teams on this tremendous achievement!
